![]() Unlike the specific landmarks which were renamed by each settler, the region was always known by the well-earned name, "Cape Fear". Throughout the early European history of the Cape Fear region, Bald Head Island underwent several settlement attempts and went by many names. Shellmounds found on Middle Island and Bluff Island indicate that Native Americans did visit the Smith Island complex, but disease and war killed off most of the Native American population, so it is difficult to know much about the original inhabitants. Bald Head Island's creek estuaries and its abundance of shellfish were probably as attractive to Native American fishermen as they are to modern fishermen. Īuthor David Stick surmises that Native Americans used Bald Head Island in much the same way that it is used now, as a seasonal retreat. ![]() The consensus view is that Bald Head Island emerged from one such sandbar, stabilized by a succession of plant life, leading to a permanent land mass. These topographical transformations are often as rapid as they are drastic. In this area, large sand bars seasonally emerge from and subsequently retreat into the sea. Located at the tip of Cape Fear and residing at the convergence of the Cape Fear River and Atlantic Gulf Stream, the land mass of Bald Head Island ends, trailing off into 30 miles (48 km) of treacherous sand bars known as Frying Pan Shoals. During the Civil War, the same redoubts served as Fort Holmes, a Confederate base of importance to shipping and smuggling. During the American Revolution, it was home to Fort George, a British fort. "Old Baldy", its out-of-service lighthouse built in 1817, is the oldest still standing in the state.īald Head Island is tiny but has played a part in two American wars. It was the primary filming location for the film Weekend at Bernie's in 1989 as well as a major location in The Butcher's Wife in 1991. The village is revered for its picturesque nature and is a popular location for vacationing. ![]() The village is part of the Wilmington metropolitan area. The population of the village was 158 at the 2010 census. Bald Head Island is nationally recognized for its sea turtle nesting activity. There are few cars on the island instead, residents drive modified electric golf carts. Only government officials are allowed to drive the beach strand route. It is accessible by ferry from the nearby town of Southport and by four-wheel drive vehicle along the beach strand from Fort Fisher to the north. Compared to the nearby city of Wilmington to the north, the village of Bald Head Island is small and somewhat remote. They’re working with the town to determine what, if any, impacts the project could have on the nest to ensure the safety of the pair.Bald Head Island, historically Smith Island, is a village located on the east side of the Cape Fear River in Brunswick County, North Carolina, United States. ![]() HTML character entity reference is a special set of characters (a code), which the browser displays as a special character or a symbol, corresponding to the entity reference code. Those ASCII characters must be encoded to properly display the output. Whenever text is copied from a webpage, our browsers directly copy the decoded characters that could not be displayed in the browsers. Web encoding properly displays the text or string in the browsers. The type of encoding used is sent to the server in the form of header information so that it can be easily and correctly parsed by the browsers. HTML Encoding means to convert the document that contains special characters outside the range of normal seven-bit ASCII into a standard form. ASCII encoding supports only the upper- and lowercase Latin alphabet, the numbers 0-9, and some extra characters which make a total of 128 characters in all. 128 different characters are defined in it including English Letters, numbers and most common special characters. It was the first character encoding standard. ASCII is the most common character set or character encoding in use on computers and the most widely used character set for encoding text electronically. ![]() (Wikipedia)ĪSCII stands for American Standard Code for Information Interchange, is a character encoding standard for electronic communication. When an HTML document includes special characters outside the range of seven-bit ASCII, there are two aspects should be taken into consideration: the information's integrity, and universal browser display. HTML has been in use since 1991, but HTML 4.0 was the first standardized version where international characters were given reasonably complete treatment. HTML describes the structure of a web page semantically and originally included cues for the appearance of the document. Web browsers receive HTML documents from a web server or from local storage and render the documents into multimedia web pages. It can be assisted by technologies such as Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and scripting languages such as JavaScript. ![]() HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is the standard markup language for documents designed to be displayed in a web browser. The tool, also, allows you to decode the encoded characters and to convert the HTML code to JavaScript Unicode string.

In some cases, landlords are also eager to replace old Bed Bath & Beyond leases because the company was paying below-market rent in certain locations, Telsey Advisory Group analysts said.īed Bath & Beyond has fallen to the “retail apocalypse” over the past decade, but many chains are still growing. “There is good interest for Bed Bath & Beyond stores that are closing given desirable locations” and an average size of around 30,000 square feet, retail analysts from Telsey Advisory Group said in a note to clients. The company's store closings will create opportunities for other chains to replace Bed Bath & Beyond. Plus, the majority of its stores are in the suburbs of mid-size and large cities and are under 50,000 square feet, all of which are attractive qualities in retail as brands trend toward smaller spaces to save on rent, labor and other overhead.Ī closed Bed Bath & Beyond store this year in Larkspur, California. Although climate science can tell us that warming will make hurricanes more severe, it is exceedingly difficult to project whether these extreme weather events will be more frequent. Add in storm surge-which, paired with sea level rise, is going to expose more of the base to deeper flooding as the century progresses-and it’s not difficult to envision that the collective impacts of a hurricane could severely undermine the base’s capacity to function-and deliver its nuclear mission. The direct impacts of, say, Category 4 hurricane winds of up to 156 miles (251 kilometers) per hour would be devastating enough for Kings Bay. Idalia’s rapid intensification amid unseasonably warm ocean temperatures in the Gulf suggest this phenomenon may well already be underway. A warmer ocean and atmosphere fuel the evaporation-condensation cycle that powers hurricanes, causing more rain, stronger winds, and so, more powerful storms. Hurricanes are only expected to get worse as global temperatures rise. Reports indicate the installation experienced minimal damage and resumed normal operations the morning after the storm passed.īut the base may not be so lucky next time. Kings Bay seems to have dodged the worst. Homes and business were destroyed, hundreds of thousands were affected by power outages, schools closed, the list goes on. While Idalia’s eventual downgrade from a Category 4 hurricane to a tropical storm meant the worst devastation was avoided, the storm-and flooding and storm surge left in its wake-still wreaked havoc. And civilian employees and dependents were ordered to evacuate according to local authorities’ guidance. On-base facilities, including the nursery, health clinic, and commissary, were closed. Four nuclear submarines undergoing maintenance had to be tightly tethered with heavy weather moorings. In anticipation of Idalia, Kings Bay operations and personnel were seriously curtailed. At a cost of $5 billion, the base is still rebuilding, making significant efforts to ensure it’s resilient to the most powerful storms. Take Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida, where a Category 5 hurricane caused catastrophic damage in 2018. This isn’t the first time the military has dealt with powerful storms and their devastating aftermath. Military bases along the southeastern coastline battened down the hatches, preparing their facilities, systems, and personnel for the worst. As the storm barreled near, state and local authorities did their best to prepare, declaring states of emergency and issuing evacuation orders. ![]() Allan helped us with what we needed to have done before the cabin arrived on site. Ammon and his crew there were very welcoming and also answered all of our questions. He even set it up so that we could go and visit the shop where it was being built. Allan helped us with the custom options we wanted and continued to answer every question quickly. We were very impressed with it and at that point decided to move forward with our cabin. They had nothing but positive things to say about Allan and Zook Cabins. They graciously allowed us to come and see it firsthand. We lived in Georgia and Allan put us in touch with a couple who were having a cabin set. Since the cabins were built offsite and everything was done online, we wanted to visit one to see if it was something we would be interested in having. He answered every question quickly and thoroughly. Allan Fisher responded in less than 24 hours and throughout the weekend we exchanged a half dozen emails. I emailed them on a Thursday evening to gather some information. We were wanting a cabin on our family property in Kentucky. From the very beginning, we have had excellent communication with them. If you are looking for a cabin my husband and I would highly recommend Zook Cabins to build it. We’re very grateful to Zook for making the whole process manageable for us to bring off without the help of a General Contractor. As we approach our move-in date, we’re very excited to get settled in to our new dream home in the secluded woods of our little town. The assembly tolerances were so good that when the cabin was set on our foundation, the perimeter of the outer walls never varied more than 1/16″ from the outer foundation walls. Our building inspector commented that, in the over 20 modular homes he’d inspected, our Zook cabin was about the strongest and best designed model he had ever seen. They work with great precision, even going so far as to caulk every single joint where any air could leak. Once the cabin arrived, the setup crew went to work and with amazing speed, assembled our cabin into a little jewel. These cabins are incredibly efficient and well-insulated, and we expect our total energy costs to heat and cool to be under $100/month. Massachusetts has some of the most stringent building codes in the country, requiring many hours of custom design modifications, but Zook met every code requirement. I can safely say that we would never have been able to bring this process to a conclusion without his help. I had literally hundreds of questions throughout the process, and in each instance, Matt produced the information I was looking for, usually the same day. Building any home is a long, tedious and stressful exercise, but Matt Albrecht was an absolutely indispensable resource throughout. We did quite a bit of research on log homes before selecting Zook, based on their great floor plans, innovative design features, and excellent customer reviews. ![]() Zapatillas Trail Running Salomon Speedcross 5 Gore-Tex Azules Hombre PZ962-QXGU.
